Istanbul
Istanbul is an amazing city with over 2000 years of history. It changed its name several times (Byzantium, Nova Roma, Costantinople) and was the capital of three powerful empires. Located at the crossroad between Europe and Asia, it remained (and still remains?) the door to Europe for centuries. In this episode we give a historical overview and talk about its foundation, the Hagia Sophia, the cisterns and many more famous sights!

Links & Show-Notes
- At minute 13:00 we are unsure if it’s correct to say that “The Turks” conquered Constantinople, but since they were the ruling class of the Ottoman Empire it seems like an okay statement.
- More information on the population exchange we talk about at minute 17:04 can be found here.
- The picture above shows one of the ereased crosses we mention at minute 23:45.
- At 28:38 we discuss Topkapi Palace, but forget to mention that if you buy the Museum Pass you can access many of the city museums without having to wait in line for each one.
- At minute 40:36 we are unsure if the current Galata Tower was already there when the Turks conquered the city. Well, not really. The tower had already been built in 1348, but the older one, which held the chain closing the port and was destroyed during the Fourth Crusade, stood on a different site.
- Spelling of the dishes we mention: Balik Ekmek, Kazandibi and Baklava.
- "12 Byzantine Rulers" is a podcast by Lars Brownworth giving an excellent summary of Byzantine history. He goes in depth on many things we barely mention. Highly recommended!
- (In Italian) “Il divano di Istanbul”, un podcast con il professor Alessandro Barbero sui sultani dell’Impero Ottomano.
